ABOUT THE GALLERY

Nestled within the timeworn streets of Amsterdam’s charismatic Jordaan area, Galerie Boomerang is based in the Boomstraat, opposite the Noorderkerk.

The gallery’s mission was to educate and sell Australian art (Aboriginal and non-indigenous Australian) art to a Dutch and European audience, whilst promoting the Indigenous art away from the usual ethnographic classifications and establishing it as a purely contemporary art form in line with other Western art practices.

HISTORY

At the time of its founding, Galerie Boomerang was the first public gallery of its kind outside Australia.

Over a seven-year period, the gallery curated and mounted more than thirty themed exhibitions featuring Australian artworks from all corners of our continent.
In addition, we assisted in many collaborations with museums and institutions, often alongside the Australian embassy, to promote Australian art and culture.

In 1999 Galerie Boomerang closed her doors to the wider public, as its founder, Peter Madden, focused more on working directly with private collectors and as an advisor to auction houses and museums. In addition, with his partner, Abigail Esman-Madden, he began dealing in international contemporary art, working with private collectors, museums, and institutions such as the Andy Warhol Estate, the Estate of John Lennon, and others.

Over the years since, Galerie Boomerang has evolved, redesigning itself to suit changing times. In October 2022, following a pause to restructure the business and undergo an extensive renovation of the space, we officially reopened the gallery, with an additional salon style space above the gallery on the first floor.
